Explore Antwerp.

Antwerp’s history stretches back to the Middle Ages when it flourished as a major trading port. By the 16th century, it became one of Europe’s wealthiest cities, earning its nickname, “The Venice of the North.”

The city’s Gothic Cathedral of Our Lady and the historic Grote Markt reflect its rich architectural legacy. Antwerp also played a pivotal role in the Renaissance, as artists like Peter Paul Rubens made it an artistic hub. Today, its historic charm blends seamlessly with its cosmopolitan energy, offering visitors a window into its storied past.

Antwerp experiences a temperate maritime climate with four distinct seasons, making it a year-round destination. The best time to visit is in the spring (April to June) and fall (September to November) when the weather is mild, and the city comes alive with outdoor activities and cultural festivals.

• Spring & Fall: Perfect for exploring parks, museums, and historic streets, with temperatures ranging from 50°F to 68°F (10°C to 20°C).
• Summer (June to August): Expect warm weather, around 65°F to 77°F (18°C to 25°C), ideal for enjoying Antwerp’s riverside attractions and outdoor cafes.
• Winter (December to February): Temperatures drop to 35°F to 45°F (2°C to 7°C), creating a cozy atmosphere with festive Christmas markets and seasonal lights.

• Tipping: Service charges are included in restaurant bills, but rounding up to the nearest euro or adding a small tip for excellent service is appreciated.
• Greetings: A handshake is the standard greeting, but a kiss on the cheek may be common among friends.
• Dining: It’s customary to wait for everyone to be served before starting a meal. Asking for the bill in restaurants is expected rather than waiting for it to be brought automatically.
• Language: While Dutch is the official language, many locals speak English fluently, making communication easy for tourists.

Antwerp's official language is Dutch, specifically the Flemish dialect, which is spoken throughout Flanders. However, English is widely understood and spoken, making communication easy for tourists. • Hallo: Hello
• Dank je wel: Thank you
• Tot ziens: Goodbye
• Alsjeblieft: Please or here you go
• Hoe gaat het?: How are you?

• General Safety: Antwerp is a safe city, but always keep an eye on your belongings, particularly in crowded areas like Central Station or popular attractions.
• At Night: Stick to well-lit streets and avoid deserted areas when walking after dark.
• Emergency Numbers: Dial 112 for police, ambulance, or fire services. Pharmacies display a list of emergency services outside their premises.
