Explore Castries.

Castries has a rich colonial past, having changed hands between the French and British numerous times in the 17th and 18th centuries. Originally called "Carenage" for its sheltered harbor, the city was renamed in 1785 after the Marquis de Castries, a French colonial minister.

A pivotal moment in Castries' history was the Great Fire of 1948, which devastated the city, prompting modern rebuilding efforts. Landmarks like the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and the Central Library reflect Castries' blend of French and British influences, standing as reminders of its resilient and diverse heritage.

Castries, Saint Lucia, enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, averaging between 77°F and 86°F (25°C to 30°C). The best time to visit is during the dry season, from December to April, offering sunny days and lower humidity.

• Winter (December - April): This season provides ideal weather for outdoor activities and beach days, with lower rainfall.
• Summer (June - November): While warmer, this is the rainy season with the potential for tropical storms, but it’s also less crowded, and the vegetation is more lush.

• Dress Code: While casual attire is common, beachwear is reserved for the beach. Dress slightly more formally for dining out or visiting religious sites.
• Island Time: Saint Lucia operates on “island time,” meaning things may move at a slower pace. Embrace the relaxed vibe and enjoy your time.

• English Spoken: English is the official language, but Saint Lucians also speak a French-based Creole called Kwéyòl.
• Kwéyòl Phrases:
  • “Bonjou” - Good morning
